Johnson City, New York is a small town in central New York. The population was 5,491 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Johnson County metropolitan area. The town was formed by the merger of two smaller villages, Greenbush and White Plains. The first settler in Johnson City was Abram Guggenheim, who arrived in 1798. By 1825, the population had reached 596 residents. In 1865, John Nevin became the first postmaster in Johnson City and served until his death in 1869. His wife Esther also held that position for many years before she passed away in 1912. In 1916, Samuel Goldsmith opened what is now Goldsmith's Pharmacy on Main Street in Johnson City. The pharmacy remains an important fixture today and has been visited by many presidents and other top officials over the years including Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton. Johnson City experienced some significant growth during World War II with both its military production and wartime housing shortages resulting in a surge in civilian enrollment at Central High School from 1942 to 1945 (the only high school open during that time). After the war ended, most of what emerged as Johnson City's commercial district developed around First National Bank on State Street between Elmwood Avenue and Elmira Road; however, several factories remain extant today (including Alcoa Aluminum Company), such as Hanes Corporation (now Wacoal) and Ford Motor Company (now Fordham University). A large fire destroyed most of downtown on December 12th 1967 which left much of the original architecture remaining unscathed although extensive damage occurred to businesses along Elmira Rd between Perry St & Market St . A new downtown base was envisioned but never built due to budgetary reasons but some early plans for redevelopment do exist online or within memory courtesy of Historic Preservation Dept

In 1835, the city voters passed an ordinance establishing free public schools within its limits. This ordinance led to the growth of education in Johnson City and throughout much of central New York State. Johnson City became one of the most important commercial centers in central New York during its early years; it was home to many merchants and traders who conducted business along with several mills, churches, and homes designed specifically for economic development purposes such as brickyards or agricultural pursuits
