Johnson City is named for American Revolutionary War general and future U.S. President George Washington. The first European to visit Johnson City was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 on his voyage from Spain to North America. He named it Villa Nova della Catena (New Village of the Chain). By 1792, when the town had a population of 1,200, it had been renamed Johnson City after General James K. Polk who fought during the Mexican–American War as a colonel in the Confederate army and later served as Ulysses S. Grant's secretary of war and coordinator of Reconstruction policy in America after the Civil War. In 1881, William McKinley became president of the United States and announced that he would not seek re-election so he could devote himself full time to running his office instead of attending Congress where he often interfered with government policies made by his predecessor Andrew Johnson which were considered unfair by many Americans including some members of Congress whom McKinley appointed himself because they did not want him to be impeached or have to go through impeachment proceedings as their boss did during Andrew Johnson's presidency; this caused much public outcry against what many people regarded as an unconstitutional act by McKinley which led eventually to his impeachment proceedings which were ultimately successful and he resigned from office two years later on February 14th 1885 becoming one of only two Ulysses S. Grant presidents who were impeached (the other being Ulysses S. Grant's successor James Buchanan). In 1912, landowner Wm Hite donated 7 acres (2 ha) north of downtown Johnson City to build what would become Elmira State Park; it was opened in 1922 following passage by the New York state legislature adding 516 acres (217 ha) east of downtown into Elmira County for parks purposes only; its original name was Forest Hills Park before being changed back to Elmira State Park in 1964 due to objections raised about possible confusion with nearby Elmira Municipal Airport which was then still called "Forest Hills Airport". On October 9th 1955 local resident Milton Wright Jr., while hiking in nearby White Sands National Monument located within NMFS boundaries proposed renaming both White Sands National Monument and Northector Peak Wilderness Preserve within NMFS jurisdiction due Touna Ridge Wilderness Preserve located within NMFS boundaries proposed rename all three wildernesses jointly under oneManagement Area name "Northector Peak Wilderness Preserve" effective immediately pending completion/review/approval by NMFS Regional Director based on Comprehensive Study completed pursuant those lands included within Northector Peak Wilderness Preserve Management Area prior thereto authorizing such name change effective January 1st 1956 pursuant thereto; upon receipt thereof from Directorate I Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission we will begin formal process for designation effective January 1st 1956 thereof \ On November 6th 1961 local resident Floyd Drysdale filed a protestation against designation request alleging noncompliance with law regarding required submission thereof; protestation received no response from authorities subsequent thereto \ After receiving information received pursuant $5000 reward offer thru anonymous donation campaign initiated by Friends Of The Earth NEW YORK Chapter we contacted NMFS Regional Director Janice Rodgersvia email dated Dec 3rd 2017 seeking reconsideration or reversal decision made Nov 6th 2011 via email order number RPT-CY-0123\ her reply arrived Dec 12th 2017 saying she has determined that designation application meets all requirements but offered no explanation beyond that\ We continue our fight until we achieve our goal--to protect these beautiful landscapes!
