New Rochelle is a borough in the New York City borough of Queens. As of 2015, its population was 42,715. It is bordered by Brooklyn to the north, Queens to the east and south, and Manhattan to the west. The name "New Rochelle" originated from what was then known as Rockland County, which was located on both sides of the Hackensack River. The first settler in what is now New Rochelle was Nicholas de Montresor, who arrived in 1664 and claimed land on the east bank of the river for Queen Anne's government. He named his new town after himself – New Rochelle – because he had recently moved back into England from France. By 1701, there were over 100 people living in New Rochelle proper; it grew rapidly during that decade due to trade with British colonies in North America and Europe. In 1724-25, some Dutch colonists established themselves here as well; they called their settlement "Willemstad". During English rule over North America (1607-1763), many Native Americans died or were forced off their land when English forces invaded or conquered it. Among them were 300 Lenape/Algonquian Indians who lived near present day East Elmhurst Avenue and Bushwick Avenue in central Brooklyn; these individuals were forcibly relocated to Westchester County (now Bronx) following an act by King George III that became known as The Indian Removal Act of 1785. Many others perished during this time including 350 Tuscarora Indians who had settled at Newtown Creek between Jamaica Plain and Flushing Meadows–Museum Hill about two miles northwest of where modern-day Park Slope stands today; they too were removed en masse toonies early 18th century colonial society such as those living along Long Island Sound along with other tribes such as Mohawk Nation located on Long Island’s eastern shoreline including Onondaga Lake). In 1807-08 Captain John Smith discovered oil shale fields offLong Island's northwestern coast while searching for a Northwest Passage through Canada; he thought this natural gas source could be used to power American warships instead of wood or whale oil used at that time.
