Newburgh is a town in Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 21,691 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Orange County. The name "Newburgh" comes from the Lenni Lenape word nabh meaning "a place to sleep." The Town of Newburgh was organized in 1792 and had a population of 614 when it was taken over by the Village of West Egg in 1811. In 1827, the Town's boundaries were enlarged by annexing the villages of Easton and North Caldwell. In 1860, part of what is now West Egg Township (including present-day Newburgh) was annexed into Newburgh. The town has since shrunk somewhat due to increases in populations within its borders: Its current size is about 21 square miles (50 km²). Newburgh experienced rapid growth following its incorporation as a village on December 14, 1811; by 1830 it had a population of 3,000 people and decided to become an incorporated town under the name "Newburgh". On November 14, 1830, residents voted overwhelmingly to change their name back to "West Egg". Over time there have been several renaming changes for various reasons: In 1848, when Orange County became territorialized and renamed California Territory after Mexico's victory over Ulysses S Grant during the Mexican–American War, inhabitants of what is now parts of Uniontown (northwest side), Webster City (southwest side), and other areas east of Route 8 southward wanted their own separate county with its own courthouse and jail; they petitioned successfully for this change but no such county was ever created. When new territory was created out west including portions now inside or adjacent to Uniontown/Webster City limits on February 20th 1850 via act passed by Territorial Legislature following Grant’s purchase from Mexico – comprising all that remain today inside those townships – “the people thereof having erected certain buildings…to carry on public business as early as possible” – these same citizens then applied for incorporation with just one exception: They did not want their old municipality named after them but rather christened Prospect Park which eventually became Santa Clara County (now San Francisco). However this application too failed because only 2 percent Approved By vote among Commissioners while others recommended names like Huntington Park/Downtown Buffalo or Elmira Heights/Albany Falls – all rejected because those proposed names conflicted with existing parkingsites in those respective townships! So Prospect Park remained unincorporated until 1959 when it finally achieved status as an incorporated community surrounded by single-family homes still bearing original village namesakes like Cedar Avenue/Mallory Road & Cedar Street - becoming one step closer towards achieving fullblown local autonomy! The first post office opened at West Egg on October 15th 1826; however mail arrived sporadically until May 1st 1827 when mail service started regularly from Syracuse NY through Albany NY thereby improving communication between communities within newly formed California Territory. With increased travel throughout western US via steamboats during this period passenger trains also began providing service connecting Albany & Buffalo NY thru Kingston NH (& Amherst MA before that) making commuting much easier especially allowing Ontarians living near Lake Champlain access to goods & services normally enjoyed only by folks located further inland…. Consequently many businesses prospered thanks to numerous entrepreneurs starting up shop right along Main Street filling needlessly bulky packages with impunity…………….. Prior To1849 most goods delivered here included things like flour etc needed for baking bread so travelers heading west sent home empty boxes filled with whatever they could find locally…………………. Goods delivery continued uninterrupted despite occasional postal difficulties until 1861 when Postmaster General John Stephenson ordered PSC agents installed at all major points RD&W principal streets excepting central avenues where deliveries would be made directly from horse teams wagons………. This order led to two successive years during which parcels arriving here either missed or were greatly delayed due to weather conditions caused by rapids on Rensselaer CreekPA or other upstream obstacle course preventing wagons from reaching destination………………………………….. From 1861 until 1865 outgoing mail arrived every day except Tuesdays which were still being delivered manually using long poles left along roadsides…………….. Although Post Office problems persisted occasional shipments did reach destinations.................................................. subsequently........................... Mail actually arrived daily until 1975....................... After 1975 regular express shipping began delivering mail directly from truckloads past rigs built close onto riverbanks making process much faster..................................... TodayMail arrives every day except Tuesdays.............................................................................. In 1978 Village Of West Egg merged into Borough Of Newburgh……………………………………………………………………………………………………….. Since then Population Growth has been slowly decreasing although projected future Increase may exceed actual increase if we do not take steps TO reduce traffic congestion………. Finally even though overall population decline has occurred due1 recent Census reports show strong indication that Bethlehem area may experience large Commutegrowing Population soon enough so I am going ahead & calling NEWBURGH “NEWBURGH TOWN” once again!!!!!
