In 1879, Oneidas became home to the United States Military Academy at West Point before finally becoming a village in 1898. During World War II, many residents served in the military or were involved with war efforts such as working on farms or manufacturing munitions for the war effort. Many people also left their homes to join forces with other patriotic organizations such as The American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars in order to help contribute to wartime efforts across the country. Many residents returned home during postwar years following World War II; however, some continue residing in Oneida today because it remains an agricultural community that provides stability and opportunities for its citizens regardless of social background or religion.

The original settlers were Englishmen who arrived in search of new land to settle after their country was invaded by Native Americans. These immigrants brought with them many skills and ideas which later helped make Oneida one of the most thriving towns in upstate New York during its early days. The first people to live in Oneida were Farmers who arrived from England in 1814 seeking land where they could grow crops and provide for their families back home. Over time, other groups of immigrants followed suit, such as Germans, Dutch-Americans, Italians, Poles and others from various parts of Europe including Britain and Ireland. As these newcomers settled into their new communities, they started to develop their own unique cultures which deeply influenced those living within them over time. OneIDA's founders were determined to bring advances within their society while still providing necessities such as food and shelter for themselves and their families. They paid close attention to detail when it came to everything from architecture to politics which led to Oneidas success over time. This type of focus also helped contribute greatly towards developing this rural community into one of the most prosperous on Long Island during its early days! Today, much like when it originated, Oneidas culture continues unchanged – thanks in part to its residents’ dedication! Oneida was first settled in 1784 by the Oneidas, who were from the Iroquois nation. The town was named for Sir George Onondaga, an Englishman who had purchased land near Oneida in 1784. By 1814, Oneida had a population of about 200 people. In 1825, the United States acquired title to part of the present-day state of New York from Great Britain. As part of this acquisition, Congress passed an act that designated Oneida as a county seat of Ontario County and gave it to Colonel Augustus Biddle (later Governor Henry W. Seward). In 1830, Oneida's population reached 1,200 people. In 1853, General James Ketchum captured Fort Erie and surrounding territory during the American Indian Wars and made it his headquarters at one point within one day's march of Oneida. Ketchum also built a mill on the west side of town which functioned until 1865 when it was destroyed by fire. On January 1, 1868, New York Statehood became effective and Onondaga County became part of it with its own government under a governor-general system model similar to that used in Canada at that time. Onondaga County continued to be divided into tiny towns until 1959 when all those settlements were consolidated into one large community known as Onondaga-Canton Junction
