Oneida is a small town in upstate New York, located on the banks of the Oswego River. It is bordered by them and Cayuga County to the south, Ontario County to the north and by Albany to the east. The population was 7,651 at the 2010 census. The town has been inhabited for over two hundred years and was named after Oneida Lake in Onondaga County. The first settler in Oneida was Nicholas Noyes who arrived in 1814. In 1824, James Aiken founded a sawmill on one of Oneida's many creeks which helped support his farming industry. In 1847, John Prentice built a gristmill on Caughnongs Creek that became an important center for flour milling around this time. The mill closed in 1880 but reopened as an iron works in 1915. In 1924, Oneida had its own school district which still operates today as part of Town School District #1 (Cayuga). The post office opened on October 26, 1828 and continued operation until it was discontinued on December 15, 1907. Oneida has three churches: First Presbyterian Church (founded 1865), Methodist Episcopal Church (1868), and Baptist church (1910). There are also several schools including Oneida Central High School (opened 1906) and Oneida East High School (opened 1962).

Oneida is a small town in the Mohawk Valley of New York state. It is located on the east bank of the Hudson River, about two miles west of Kingston, Ontario. The original inhabitants were Algonquian-speaking Lenape who called it Muhawkanaba or "Great Place." Oneida was first settled by Europeans in 1624 and became part of what is now Albany County, New York. In 1778, Oneida was renamed after General Sir George Washington's military victory at Saratoga over the British army. The community rapidly grew during the late 18th century as a result of its strategic location and its access to water resources. The construction of the Erie Canal in 1825 led to a surge in development around Oneida Falls and elsewhere along the canal route. This growth spurt created new opportunities for businesses and workers, as well as demand for housing. As more people came to live in Oneida, it began to develop into a small town with its own school system, churches, churches’ schools and other public buildings. The population peaked at 10,000 in 1830 but declined thereafter due to various factors such as an increase in immigration from Europe and an influx of refugees following the American Revolution. By 1870, however, Oneida had regained some of its lost population due to waves of emigration from rural areas throughout New York State into urban centers like Buffalo and Rochester. During World War II many residents joined up with their local military units to fight against Nazi Germany; many also took up arms against Japan after Pearl Harbor attack on December 7th 1941 (the day America entered World War II). Many residents chose not to return home until after 1945 when hostilities ended; however most families continued living within one mile (1 km)of their homes through post-war years before moving away again during economic prosperity beginning in Wizarding Town era which followed war breakup phase Today Oneida has experienced significant revitalization since 2001 with efforts focused on arts & culture; education; sustainability; global awareness/sensitivity initiatives including support for renewable energy technologies & climate change resilience.; community engagement including villageWide Elections every 4 years thru Village Governance Committee composed entirely out volunteers (& current members!) ; restoration/rebirth project begun 2018
