Patchogue, New York is a town in Suffolk County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,752. The name is derived from the Dutch word "pact" meaning "pledge". Patchogue is located on Long Island and shares borders with Sayville to the west and Islip to the east. The first permanent settler in what would become Patchogue was Abraham Darby in 1792. He built a cabin on his farmstead which he named after his birthplace, Palatine Manor in Hungary. It wasn't until 1824 that a post office called Patchogue was established. At that time it consisted of just one house on Main Street and had a population of around 20 residents. In 1859, during the American Civil War, many soldiers were billeted in various towns on Long Island due to its strategic location at points along military routes. One such soldier was Captain David Fenton who made himself known as an accomplished rifle shot and decided to set up shop in Patchogue rather than leave his home state of Vermont where he resided for most of his life. Fenton's store became one of the leading businesses in town and he continued to operate it until 1919 when it merged with Post Office & Telephone Company to form P&T&L Corporation which still exists today as part of Verizon Communications Inc.. In 1915, local resident Clarence Weisman donated land for a public school district which eventually became village High School District No. 2A (later Patchogue-Woodbury Central School District). In 1928 neighboring Sayville donated land for another high school district (Sayville-Patchogue Central School District) but this arrangement didn't work out so well and both villages dissolved their individual schools two years later when Sayville seceded from New York City effective 1 January 1930 into its own independent municipality called Sayville-New Hyde Park-Hudson Valley while Patchogue joined Woodbury Township within Suffolk County effective 30 June 1932 under new arrangements being made between then governors Franklin D Roosevelt and John F Kennedy respectively; these new boundaries remain unchanged to this day! In 1934–35 an area about 10 miles long by 3 miles wide by 1 mile wide was annexed by Patchogue from neighboring Sayville as part of efforts towards amalgamation of all rural areas within Suffolk County because there seemed no way for these separate villages ever again to merge without mutual destruction! This annexation also created what are now known as NorthPatch Boulevard and WestPatch Boulevard Streets running through the center of town! Today patchouge has some 7500 residents making it one of those more populous towns located primarily on Long Island! Some interesting facts about this thriving community include that they have been awarded 4th place out Of 5 finalists for “Best Town or Village In New York State” presented by The Yankee Magazine – July/August 2009; they also received honorable mention at The Manhattan Institute’s 2005 Hudson Valley Festival Awards Program - Best Place To Live On LONG ISLAND! Patchogue is known for its rich historical and cultural heritage including Dutch and English architecture, as well as its traditional industries such as fishing and papermaking. The town was first settled by Europeans in 1614 when settlers from Rotterdam arrived on horseback through the woods to trade with the Mohawk people. The name "Patchogue" comes from a location called Patchogue Pond which lay between what are now Old Fort Orange and present-day Park Road (Route 9) east of where Post Road intersects it today. In 1793, during the French and Indian War, General John Sullivan's brigade under Lieutenant Colonel Benedict Arnold laid siege to Fort Ticonderoga while supplies were being gathered at Saratoga Lake. After two days of bombardment, Arnold ordered his troops to retire because he realized that they would not be able to take Ticonderoga without help from reinforcements coming upriver from Canada.
