The first European to enter Tonawanda was Dutchman Adriaen de Vries in 1624 and he named it "Hertogenbosch" after his home town in Holland. In 1715, Pierre-Jacques Marquette and Louis Hennepin explored the area and named it “New Amsterdam” after the city of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. The first settler in Tonawanda was Nicholas Davenport who arrived on July 5, 1814 from Kingston, Ontario with his family. He platted what is now known as Town Square on Long Island Sound and built a house there which still stands today. The Village of Tonawanda was formed by splitting off Township 4 East from Township 2 North on November 3, 1818. On May 10th of that year they voted to create a Village Hall which they did not do until later that year because no one wanted to build there themselves because of high taxes levied by the Township government at that time. In 1827 James Kieft moved to Tonawanda from Schenectady with his family and began trading goods along Route 9 between Tonawanda and Seneca Lake then upstate New York before coming downriver to open up what is now Niagara Falls into trade with Canada for fur coats and other commodities during the American Revolution In 1865 Cornelius Vanderbilt founded Pan Am Airways out of Buffalo Airport when he purchased an airfield next door for $1 million Tonawanda has had its own mayor since 1970; current Mayor Jeff Lehrer took office on January 1st of this year As per the 2018 Census Bureau report:
