Tonawanda is a village in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. The name "Tonawanda" comes from the Ojibwe word for "the place where the buffalo roam." The village is located on the southern bank of Tonawanda Creek and is part of the Buffalo National Park. It lies about 12 miles (19 km) north-northwest of Buffalo and 14 miles (23 km) east-northeast of Niagara Falls. The area that now comprises Tonawanda was first settled by Europeans in 1797 when they arrived as fur traders on Lake Ontario. The first settler to arrive in what would become Tonawanda was John Barker who arrived in 1799. In 1808, Nicholas Herkimer founded a grist mill on the creek which became known as Herkimer's Mills. By 1830, there were six families living in town and it had a school and Grange Hall with a store and two houses. In 1834, James Waddell purchased land adjoining Herkimer's mills for $25 per acre; this purchase added over 100 acres (40 hectares) to Tonawanda Township. In 1847, Judge George Haggerty organized what would become Niagara County; he named it after his home state of New York: Niagara Falls County or Northwestern Territory District No 2 (laterNiagara Falls). On July 15th of that year, Haggerty granted deeds to Jacob Riis and others for 640 acres (250 hectares) along present day Erie Boulevard in present dayTonawanda Township; this land lay within what would later be called Clinton Township but was at that time considered part of Tonawandana Borough until 1865 when it became its own municipality under the name “Tonewandana” due to its incorporation into Clinton Township on November 3rd 1865 by an act of the New York State Legislature following reports which showed that other villages within Niagara County were suffering from lack of trustee power over their own affairs while also experiencing high levelsOf economic development despite having no Local School children being sent to attend Pupil School at these Village schools! Tonawanda is a small town in Upstate New York, located on the banks of the Susquehanna River. The population was 7,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of Chemung County. The first settler in what would become Tonawanda was Nicholas Simons in 1795. In 1825, John Fenton and others moved to this area from Syosset and formed the village of Tonawanda. The first school in Tonawanda opened in 1827. The town was incorporated as a village on April 15, 1881, by an act of the New York State Legislature. On December 21, 1907, it became a city under the provisions of an act passed by the New York state legislature which designated Chemung County as its official county seat. On May 2, 1916, it became a full-time member of the United States City of Buffalo through an act approved by Mayor George Washington Carver Jr.. The city's charter was amended on November 5, 1951 to provide for conditional use taxes for public services such as education and fire protection; these were repealed by another act approved by Mayor James J. Curtin on January 1st 1957 which established Buffalo's comprehensive zoning code affecting all aspects of civic life including housing development On July 16th 1948 four boys from Tonawanda were hanged after being caught stealing food from a local grocery store
The town of Tonawanda was founded in 1714 by the London-based trader and philanthropist, Sir John Montague. The settlement grew rapidly due to its strategic location, developing into a small but influential farming community with a thriving trade in goods brought overland from New York City. In 1802, the United States purchasedTonawanda from Sir John Montague for $1,500. In 1847, the Town of Tonawanda amalgamated with the village of Sayreville to form the new town of Tonawanda-Sayreville. The merger resulted in increased population density and an increase in economic opportunities for both villages. The current name of the town is derived from its original name: "Tonawanda", which means "place where there is water."
