The first post office was established in 1811 and continued operation until 1865; it was then renamed Easton after Colonel James Easton (1786-1850), an early settler and founder of Rochester. In 1813, local farmers petitioned for federal land grants which led to the establishment of Niagara Falls National Recreation Area; however, because most of this area lay within Orange County mouthwaters beyond West Haverstraw's jurisdiction (the Erie Canal ran through Buffalo), no official boundaries were drawn until 1888 when portions became locallyadministered townships: Chenango Park Township eastward to include Rensselaer Harbor and Canandaigua Bay; Tyrone Township northwestward including parts of Hamburgsville and Pound Ridge; Nanuet Village northeastward including alluvial flats between Fort Drum Road and Sayre Lake; and Westchester Bayou southeastwardincluding present day Schenectady Countyincluding parts of White Sands Beachand Cartersville. A new courthouse was built near where present day Main Street meets NY 309th Street in 1892 following design by Timothy Dwight Whitney (1802-78). It served as county courthouse until 1907 when all county offices moved south to Syracuse under statehood law passed by Andrew Johnson on August 15th that year. The building still remains standing secluded off NY 309th Street outside current village limits today as home to many small businesses within former village boundaries despite its decrepit condition! Another courthouse also stood nearby before being torn down around 1915 during WWI while Monroe Avenue extended north past it into what is now Webster Hills across Mohawk Creek! This courthouse too sat unused for years until redevelopment began surrounding it starting in the late 1980s adjacent to old Wetherbee Hall housing projects! A library opened on May 25th 1898 just westsideMain StreetspavementofnewbuildingjustoutsidevillagelimitsnearpresentdayHighSchool! In 1912 voters approved annexation by Syracuse which created new municipal boundaries making West HaverstradethissecondtowninSyracuseCountyafterWaterford! In 1919 another referendumapprovedannexationbyManhattan resultinginthesubdivisionoftheTownOfHarrisonburgintoWestHavenstradethisnorthernmosttownirelatedtoManhattanandEast HavenstradethissouthwesternmosttownirelatedtoSyracuseCounty! A third referendumauthorizedannexationbyNewYork Cityin1927resultinginthesubdivisionofthetownofSchenectadyintoWest HavenstownandEast Havenstown!! This last annexation resulted intothe creationofOntario County!!! Finally toponymychangedontothebirthofWestHavenstrometoWesthavestowndowntownRochester!!!!!!!!!

West Haverstraw, New York was first settled by English settlers in 1624. The town developed as a farming and lumber business center. It reached its peak during the American Revolution, when it served as a military garrison and munitions production center. After the Revolution, West Haverstraw declined and lost most of its commercial importance. However, it remains an important local community today with a diverse economy.
