White Plains, New York is a small town located in Westchester County, New York. The population was 26,752 at the 2000 census and 31,914 as of the 2010 census. Hudson's maps note that he found "a great bay" which may have been what later became White Plains Creek. Hudson named it after himself and his ship the Huygens in honor of Jan van der Zee (1584-1641), head of the Dutch East India Company's first voyage to explore Northeast America undersea routes between Amsterdam and London since 1596. White Plains is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 27,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York–Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlers in White Plains were three brothers, Nicholas, John and Abelardus Van Cortlandt from Holland who arrived in 1676. They founded the village of Cortlandt on the east bank of the Hudson River in what is now White Plains. The name originated with a white lime tree which grew near their cabin. In 1795, General James Clinton built Fort Schuyler on an artificial peninsula on the western shore of Long Island Sound to protect Manhattan against British attack. The fort was abandoned after two years and eventually became part of White Plains’s public school system and government buildings until it burned down in 1814. White Plains saw its first major influx of people during World War II when more than 60% of all residents were military veterans or their dependents. More than 30 companies that manufactured munitions within White Plains produced products that helped contribute to America's war effort including Ford Motor Company (1916), Pneumatic Tractor Corporation (1918), American Cyanamid (1925), Standard Oil(1929) and Philip Morris Tobacco Company (1939). During the early 20th century, many businesses moved away from downtown Whitespine because of zoning changes that limited their ability to operate without disturbing other businesses on Main Street which had been renamed Park Avenue after President Woodrow Wilson's wife Eleanor Roosevelt. In 1925, local securities broker JF Caldwell & Co., Incorporated bought out Caldwell Brothers Printing Presses from its founders for $1 million; this made White PLAthe first company ever to be publicly traded on Wall Street underwritten by a syndicate including Morgan Stanley & Co., Kuhn Loeb SonsCorp., JF Caldwell himself and five others.) A new downtown district was planned but never constructed because of opposition from property owners who felt they would lose access to valuable commercial properties while development occurred across their lots constituting what is today North Greenbush Road Extension Boulevard
