Asheboro is a city in North Carolina, United States. The population was 497 at the 2010 census. Asheboro is the county seat of Ashe County and part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem metropolitan area. It is located on the eastern edge of Henderson County, adjacent to Charlotte, North Carolina. The first Europeans to visit what is now Asheboro were French traders in 1763. There were two settlements—one by Scotsmen and one by Virginians—before an Englishman named John Catesby founded a plantation there in 1771. The town was called New Bern until 1827 when it changed its name to Asheboro after General Robert Elisha Ashe, who had fought for America during the American Revolution. In 1838, General James Longstreet's forces destroyed Education Hall in what is now downtown Asheboro while they burned nearby plantations; this event became known as "The Great Fire of 1838." The townspeople rebuilt and renamed themselves "Asheboro" after General Asher's home state of Virginia. In 1861, Confederate soldiers from neighboring Durham raided Asheboro while Union troops were besieging Fort Sumter on Sullivan's Island; the raid caused much damage and loss of life among both sides but little lasting damage occurred in Asheboro itself. After the war ended, many former Confederate soldiers returned to their homes in northeastern North Carolina and resumed farming operations there; as a result, fewbuildings remain from that period within downtown Asheboro today. In 1965, local officials decided that it would be more efficient for them to combine their offices into one building inside city limits so that services could be better coordinated; this decision led to construction of Memorial Coliseum which opened in 1970 and seats up to 75,000 people indoors or out on four large fields east of downtown. Asheboro is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. Asheboro is the county seat of Gaston County. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Asheboro was first settled by Scots-Irish Catholics who arrived in what is now Gaston County in 1825. In 1830, land north of the Catawba River was sold to Captain John Smith for $1,000 and developed as a new town named Asheboro after General James Johnston's home state of Virginia. By 1840, Asheboro had a population of 2,500 people and it became the county seat in 1846 when Gaston County was created from Anson and Davidson counties. In 1870, a post office called "Ashburn" was established in present-day Gastonia; this name continued until 1895 when it changed to "Asheboro". The first store opened in what is now downtown Asheboro on December 10th, 1870 under the name "National Bank & Trust Company". In 1872, an Andrew Johnson presidential campaign stop made him one of the first people to be seen in town; he later said that he originated from "an old Scotch family which has lived hereabouts for generations." In 1902 an express train derailed on a switch near Asheboro killing twenty-one passengers and injuring hundred more; this event helped spur economic development around Asheboro with businesses opening up to take advantage of increased safety measures including tightrailroad crossings at milepost 9 (now known as Elm street). A steel mill opened its doors just east of downtown Asheboro in 1903 along with other businesses such as a barbershop and restaurant soon followed suit making Asheborne one of the most prosperous small towns within commuting distance for many citizens. During World War I munitions production dramatically increased due to America's entry into hostilities but much like many other small towns throughout North Carolina during that time there were no mass transit options or means for residents to get around so manufacturing jobs often took precedence over personal needs such as groceries or health care. After World War I ended however things picked up again with growth being spurred by expansions into new markets such as Europe although some remaining mills closed down through lack Of competition or technological advances leading directly to layoffs amongst workers not only at those mills but also some smaller factories located further away from larger commercial areas where job opportunities were available before these closures occurred. Once again during postwar years growth slowed but because there were no major setbacks economic conditions began to improve once again culminating with another expansion into European markets due primarily to advancements within Automotive engineering which led directly to increased profits for companies like Ford Motor Co., Chrysler Corporation and GMC Truck divisions all located outside Asheville proper even though employment levels remained lower than they had been earlier despite broader access widespread availability/employment than ever before given advances within technology etc.; this period also saw significant increases both locally funded arts programs (like PNC Arena) while also seeing significant investment coming from outshored southeasternaleigh communities resulting in more integrated local economies overall including job opportunities for locals rather then intrusions by outlying communities looking TO control resources/jobs within their own borders instead oi having these controls restricted externally through eminent domain rulings etc.). Ashboro was founded in 1792 by John Ashe, a Revolutionary War veteran and colonel in the North Carolina militia. The town is located on the banks of the Nashua River, within sight of Hendersonville and Raleigh. Asheboro became a small community with around 100 residents in 1800. By 1860, it had grown to 1,000 people. In 1871, Asheboro joined the Union as a town and remained so until 1965 when it became part of the new Asheville metropolitan area.
