The first thing that people in Asheboro noticed were the numerous trees. These trees had been there for years before anyone realized they were important. The next thing that people noticed was how close together all of the houses were. This was because people in this area used to live close together and share goods and services because there weren't any other places to go. All of these things started happening when someone named John White built his house on what is now Main Street in 1817. At this time, Asheboro was known as just Westover Village. John White was a white man who owned some land near where we now stand and he decided to build his own house so he could have more privacy and less competition from other people. As time passed, other white men started building their own homes too, so Asheboro began to grow faster than Westover Village ever did! In 1851, John Nash bought some additional land from White and thus created what is now Easton Avenue in Asheboro! In 1861, when Confederate General Robert Ewell arrived in town with his army during the American Civil War, many local citizens wanted him gone because they felt that he would bring shame onto their town! However, even though they didn't want him here, most locals helped support Confederate troops by selling food and drinks to them! After Robert Ewell's death in 1865, most residents left town again until sometime around 1870 when General George Mecklenburg moved into town! He made it his home until his death in 1902! During this time period (1861-1902), Asheboro became an important city within North Carolina due to its growing economy!

The town was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1814 as part of an attempt to fill the void created by the removal of all European settlers from what is now eastern North Carolina. Asheboro became a separate municipality on May 1, 1868.
