When the United States entered World War I, many Asheville residents volunteered for military service. Many of these men and women had never seen a gun before. They were astonished at how easy it was to acquire one and how reliable the firearms were. The city's first holster company was founded in 1916 by George Titherington and James Hargrave. The holster business quickly became successful and soon began manufacturing holsters for a variety of weapons, including pistols, shotguns, rifles, and Mace guns. In 1922, the company relocated its operations to what is now known as Brown-Baron Hall on Trade Street in downtown Asheville. Here, Holster Bros. continued manufacturing high-quality handguns and holsters until it closed its doors in 1966.
