Boone is a town in Transylvania County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,872 at the 2010 census. It is the fiveteenth-largest community in North Carolina and the second-largest in Transylvania County. Boone is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to live in what would become Boone was James Robertson in 1784. The town began as a small farming community with only twelve residents when it was chartered by the South Carolina General Assembly on December 15, 1810. The town's charter called for Boonesborough Plantation to be "a place of general cultivation and commerce." In 1814, Boone became one of eleven townships within Transylvania County formed from parts of Robeson and Union counties following the creation of Johnston County. Boone is a small town located in Trimble County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is the only municipality in Trimble County. The first permanent settler in Boone was Amos Green who settled on land granted to him by the British government in 1772. The town of Boone began as a log cabin colony founded by John and Martha Haddock in 1825. By 1830, there were over 100 inhabitants living in Boone and six surrounding townships. In 1832, two people from Raleigh founded what would become Raleigh and bought 724 acres (280 hectares) of land south of present-day Boone for $1 per acre. They named their new community "Raleigh." In 1835, the state legislature authorized the erection of schools within four miles (6 kilometers) of each town center for female schoolchildren between the ages of 10 and 16 years old. By 1840, there were twelve public schools operating within three miles (5 kilometers) of Boone proper; one school operated outside Ofelia township limits near present day Hendersonville). When slavery was abolished in 1865, most white settlers left for other parts of North Carolina or Virginia without taking any Unionists with them. A few hundred black residents remained behind until Reconstruction ended in 1871 with the passage of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Ulysses S Grant. Most black enrollment ceased soon afterward when schools were reopened to all races and many freedmen returned to farming families across central North Carolina after emancipation.
