Boone, North Carolina is a small town located in the Western Piedmont region of the U.S. state of North Carolina. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of Buncombe County and is bordered by Asheville to the south and west, Weldon to the north, and Murfreesboro to the east. The town was founded in 1835 by hardworking Scots-Irish settlers who had come overland from Ireland during the Great Famine. Boone's name means "burnt wood" and its founders believed that it would be an ideal place for a tobacco plantation because of its flat landscape and abundance of trees. The first tobacco plantations were built in Boone by wealthy landowner David Neale in 1839-1840, but production dropped after a hurricane destroyed much of western North Carolina during that year's Panic of 1837. In 1840, financial problems led toNeale selling his holdings in Boone to Daniel Boone for $10,000 cash plus 6000 acres (2405 hectares) of land on which he began developing what became known as "the Great Preacher." From its origins as a small hamlet with just over 100 residents in 1835 until it reached its current size as an incorporated village in 1920 – all while remaining within Buncombe County – Boone experienced some defining moments including: 1) Its incorporation into Buncombe County on October 1, 1920; 2)becoming one of only two towns located entirely within Buncombe County (the other being Weaverville); 3) rapid growth following World War II when military barracks were constructed along with new housing developments; 4) experiencing steady population loss through annexation by surrounding communities throughout the 1970s; 5) experiencing a resurgence starting around 2000 as more people moved back into town post-recessionary trends.; 6) becoming vibrant commercial center focused primarily around agricultural produce retailing from local farms/stores; 7) undergoing significant gentrification beginning around 2005 through development along Interstate 85 near downtown Boonesville attributed largely to increasing job opportunities associated with nearby strip malls and light industrial areas
Boone was founded in 1775 by James Boone, a Revolutionary War veteran and surveyor. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s, thanks to its location on the banks of the Yadkin River. In 1812, Boone became a county seat and remained so until 1907. During that time, it enjoyed a large population growth due to its location along the main road between Raleigh and Charlotte. In 1925, Boone merged with neighboring Beechwood County to form Union County.
