In 1814 Governor Zebulon Vance issued a proclamation designating Burlington as capital of Swain County due to its high population growth rate and potential for economic development. On July 1st of that year - just two years after its incorporation as a town - Burlington became home to America’s first commercial steamboat landing when Rufus King landed his brigantine “Queen City” here on Roanoke Island with over 100 passengers onboard. During Reconstruction Burlington experienced some significant growth; it became one of only a few African American towns in white America during this time period and saw rapid industrialization thanks to its location near major railroads and other businesses that eagerly took advantage of its resources. This period also witnessed significant social progress for black citizens such as passage of both the National Prohibition Amendment (1920) and Voting Rights Act (1963). Since 2000 Burlington has seen increased redevelopment with an estimated $215 million being invested into new buildings, infrastructure, parks & businesses within its boundaries alone!
