The first houses were built around this time, and by 1905 Burlington had reached its current size. These businesses helped support large populations during difficult times during Reconstruction due to their importance in supplying goods needed by soldiers returning from service abroad. During the early 1920s, however, Burlington started experiencing rapid growth due largely to population increases caused by World War I veterans returning home from Europe. This population explosion led to overcrowding within existing buildings – which resulted in many fires that burned throughout the city over the years. In 1922–23, however, City Council passed an ordinance establishing regulations governing building construction so that future fire outbreaks would not occur. This ordinance effectively saved Burlington from further destruction during these tumultuous years; it remains one of City Hall’s most lasting accomplishments! In recent decades, Vermont Avenue – once dubbed “America’s Main Street” – has become one of Burlington’s primary shopping areas2 . Numerous new restaurants have opened up along this street over recent years3 , making it oneofthe most vibrant locales in town4 .
