Burlington is a city in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Area. Burlington's history dates back to 1828 when it was founded as a town by Methodist missionaries in what is now Moore County. Burlington grew rapidly during the late 19th century and early 20th century due to its strategic location near Interstate 85 and other trade routes. The city was incorporated as a municipality in 1912 and became an official U.S. city on July 1, 1933. Burlington has been nicknamed "The City of Roses" for its many roses that grow around town. Prior to the arrival of white settlers, the area now known as Burlington was inhabited by Native Americans: the Creek Indians were especially numerous here because they had rich coal deposits that were used by early Anglo-American settlers for heating and cooking purposes; however, most Creek villages were destroyed by British forces during General Cornwallis's surrender at Yorktown in 1781. When English traders arrived in this region in the late 18th century, they discovered valuable minerals such as coal and lead hereabouts which led to increased development of this area; accordingly, Burlington began growth very quickly becoming one of Learn's earliest American settlements on what would become U.S.-Canada border In 1828, Methodist missionaries came to Burr Ridge (now Moore) County with instructions to establish what would later be called Burlington as a church town; however, due to lack of space or funding some residents chose instead to build themselves homes rather than take up residence within sight of God’s Way Chapel (later First Baptist Church). In just over a year after their founding – February 28 & March 6 1828 – Reverend James Aiken organized twenty-four people into two patrols under Captain John Sennett each consisting of six men including Aiken himself leading them “the journey from Newcastle towards [Burlington]…to preach religion among these heathens” Assembling at Randolph’s ferry along I-85 outside present day Durham on Saturday morning April 2 1830 numbered eightysix purported members including thirty-eight women who regularly attended services there conducted mostly by Aiken himself This first glimpse into what would become today's downtown Burlington can be seen from I-85 between exits #4a/5b southbound and exit #6 northbound where large fields once lined both sides of the highway providing excellent cover for potential attackers should anyone wish try crossing during those days Many saw this early effort as a sign that Burr Ridge could not remain isolated from Whatwouldbecomeknownas America’s “ Frontier Country” given that Methodists had already established churches throughout much present day South Carolina Consequently though their housing options initially proved inadequate they gradually constructed more modest dwellings until finally starting developing brick buildings which still line Main Street today These pioneering ministers continued preaching even after leaving Burr Ridge some time later returning in 1830 but Mrs Aiken did not accompany them this time = One account claims she became too ill but another says she did not return home until after her husband died suddenly while serving out his mandatory military service overseas After waiting nearly two years local citizens met again on October 10 1833 when delegates from several nearby towns convened at Randolph plantation near UNC campus resulting in formation of Albemarle County government with David Waddell elected Governor
