During World War II, Burlington played key roles in providing essential munitions for the war effort including producing tanks and artillery shells at two locations: Heigham Air Force Base and Charlotte Army Ammunition Plant. After hostilities ended in 1945, many businesses closed or merged during what has been called "the post-war boom". However, growth resumed in recent decades with several new construction projects such as downtown redevelopment (including an $85 million addition to the National Register of Historic Places), arrivals of new high-tech companies (such as Amazon Web Services) and expansions into other industries (such as medical cannabis). Today's economy is based largely on services while job creation remains strong due to advances within technology fields such as biotechnology, health care analytics and data sciences
Burlington was founded in 1795 by Captain James Caldwell and his wife, Elizabeth. The town grew rapidly due to its location at the mouth of the Yadkin River, which made it a popular shipping point for goods arriving from South Carolina and Georgia. The Caldwells were also instrumental in building Burlington's first school, which opened in 1800. In 1814, Burlington became the capital of North Carolina after Raleigh was moved to the state from Tennessee. Burlington continued to grow as a trading center until the early 20th century when its importance declined because of progressive taxation and its distance from major centers.
