The Burlington, North Carolina area has a long and significant history of optical equipment manufacturing. The first factory in the area was built in 1892 by James M. Fenton, a glass manufacturer, to produce chandeliers. In 1899, Fenton founded the Burlington Glass Workshops to produce stained glass windows. The company continued to grow until it became one of the largest producers of optical equipment in America by 1915. During World War I, Burlington produced war material such as rifles and machine guns. After the war, the company resumed its production of optics products, becoming one of the leading manufacturers in this field again during the 1920s through 1940s. In 1994, SHARP purchased Allied Signal Corporation's electronics arm which was then renamed both Allied Signal Electronic Components Division and then simply SHARP Incorporated before being spun off into its own separate business unit in 1998 called Sharp Electronics Incorporation (SEI). SEI continues to make high-quality electronic components today as well as providing services such as customer support and warranty management for its corporate customers across many industries including medical technology, aerospace engineering and defense systems etc. It is interesting that over time there have been several different companies that have produced optical accessories including those mentioned above: James M Fenton's Burlington Glass Workshops; Thomson-Houston Corp./Burlington Industries Inc.; Sharp Corp./Allied Signal Electronic Components Division; SEI; and finally Sharp ElectronicsInc./Sharp Electric Co., Ltd.. After independence from Great Britain, Burlington became an important center for cotton textile production beginning in 1827 until it was surpassed by Durham in importance around 1900s During World War II, Vermont Yankee munitions plants produced arms for Allied forces and local industries supported military operations including air raids on Greensboro and Asheville during 1944-1945; ground combat actions against Japanese forces across Iwo Jima (1942); Operation Market Garden (1944) – leading to Montgomery's surrender; plus atomic bombing attacks on Hiroshima ( 1945) In 1949, Burlington opened its doors to students studying business administration at Duke University—the first such program outside traditional universities —and remains one of only a few American universities offering such programs today In 1966-1967, Burlington hosted the United States Olympic trials for track & field following America's victory over Great Britain at Amsterdam’s Royal Palace . That same year saw the inauguration of Ulysses S Grant as President of the United States A major renovation project began downtown in 2003 that included new streetscape design along with expansion of city services throughout its core areas including public health care research institutes located within walking distance from city hall; library systems were increased from one to three branches; renovated hotels/motels located within walking distance from city hall; as well as new parks within walking distance from city hall completion helped drive up property values downtown while simultaneously creating much needed retail space adjacent to government buildings In 2013-2014 Mayor Kenneth Blackwell announced plans to reduce traffic congestion on Interstate 85 through Downtown by adding bike lanes and improving pedestrian crossings along First Street NE culminating with construction starting late summer 2014 eventually concluding Fall 2015
