Burlington is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the Burlington River. The population was 24,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg-Garland metropolitan area and is included in the Raleigh–Durham-Cleveland Combined Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Burlington was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524, during his search for a new route to Asia. He named it "Nova Carta" after his patron saint, St Augustine of Hippo. The first permanent settler in what is now Burlington was Captain John Smith who built a trading post here in 1609 with other Englishmen on land that he had acquired from Native Americans. In 1764, General James Johnston's army burned down this trading post and destroyed all evidence that America had ever been here before. In 1814, Burlington became part of North Carolina when it was split off from Virginia as part of the Compromise of 1813 which ended the American Civil War; its northern boundary then ran along present-day Interstate 285 and Interstate 70 (now known as I-85). After the war ended, Vermont took back most of what it lost but Burlington retained its western boundary until 1850 when it became an independent city within North Carolina.
