Charlotte is a city in North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Davidson County and is part of the Asheville metropolitan area. It is located on the Yadkin River and has been named one of America's "Top 10 Historic Places" by Smithsonian magazine. The town of Charlotte was founded by white settlers in 1795 as an Unincorporated Settlement on land granted to them by Governor James Tryon. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s due to its location along two major trade routes -the western Turnpike and the eastern Catawba Trail- and its access to timber, minerals, slaves, and goods from Georgia and South Carolina. By 1810, Charlotte had become a thriving port with warehouses storing wines from France and Spain; dockworkers loading cotton from New England onto ships for export; a blacksmith shop; a school; a Methodist church; and several hundred homes. In 1825, when General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved his army through central North Carolina during what became known as the Battle of Resaca de la Palma, Charlotte was among those who welcomed him into their community. From that day forward, many residents came to identify themselves as "Forrestites." In 1865 local politician Elijah Hicks organized a militia detachment called East Tennessee Volunteers in response to United States President Abraham Lincoln's proposal for military service in support of Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee. On April 12th of that year (1865), Hicks' unit joined Union forces marching westward across South Carolina towards Raleigh before turning south towards Charlotte along Interstate 85 near Bentonville. As they passed through Charlotte on their way southward they were met by Confederate artillery batteries positioned on Hillsborough Street just east of downtown – open territory controlled by Union troops at this time – resulting in what would be known as Hick’s Massacre. At least 20 members of Hicks' unit were killed or captured including Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Garland Hill later serving as an American general during World War II
