Charlotte, North Carolina is a city in the state of North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,546 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mecklenburg County. Charlotte is located on the east bank of the fall line between Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham metropolitan areas. The city has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa), with warm to hot days and mild to cool nights year round. The area that now makes up Charlotte was first settled by European colonists in 1728 as part of an effort by King George II of Great Britain to extend his possessions into what is now south central America. At that time, northcentral America was under Spanish control and British settlers were pushing for independence from Spain. In 1760, when Charleston became the capital of South Carolina, Savannah moved into what is now eastern Mecklenburg County and new settlements were established around Hillsborough River near today's downtown area. By 1775, most of Mecklenburg County had been annexed by Charlotte including much of modern Durham County which lay east of Interstate 95 until that highway was built across western Mecklenburg County in 1964. In 1819, land north and west of present-day uptown was acquired for what would become downtown Charlotte when leaders decided it would be more important to have a central business district rather than scattered small villages dotting the countryside around Gaston Avenue]. On July 12th 1839 during Jacksonian Democracy Mayor James Broughton announced plans for a grand boulevard running through downtown which he dubbed "Queen Street". Construction began on Queen Street on October 15th 1840 with streets leading out from Varick Hall towards Morehead Square while Emanuel Church continued to be used as an internal church building until 1865 when it became State Capitol Annexe No 2]. This structure served as both City Hall and home to various government departments until 1907 when it burned down following Hurricane Andrew]. However before this disaster occurred Confederate General Robert E Lee ordered construction begun on One million bricks – undoing all progress made on Queen Street] That same year Classes began at Stonewall Jackson High School [now Jordan Humphrey Coliseum], one block away from where later riots took place between students and police officers resulting in nine dead After years living off donations provided primarily by Methodist ministers Reverend Drayton tried fundraising campaign using billboards throughout town but without success] In 1928 white flight began moving people from streetcar suburbs such as Uptown along I-95 towards Downtown where they could purchase homes or build new businesses civic activities like painting murals replaced agriculture As African Americans gained political power their concerns about crime increased pressure led some mayors like Emanuel who saw potential benefits for black enterprise development along Qwest Arena Boulevard developed zoning laws allowing mixed race companies limited access until 1978when siting regulations were changed making downtown exclusively residential again Streets named after segregationist figures like Jesse Owens or Reva Davis resulted including Greenwood Avenue honking Signal Hill Road renamed Tryon avenues Aldermanic Districts dominated by African American incumbents who pushed development near UNC Medical Center instead[ Today many institutions founded during earlier decades still standing such as Community Health Centers relocated closer to University Mall creating Frogmore Place corridors connecting old neighborhoods with current ones ].
