At that time, there were only three sporting goods stores in Charlotte – two owned by friends of George and one by his father-in-law – and it was these two businesses that were responsible for bringing firearms into the city limits. For years afterwards, Red Dot SightHistory operated out of these two shops alone; however, starting in 1928, we began renting space from J.C. Higgins & Sons Firearms Company until our current location on South Tryon Street came online in 1975. Today, Red Dot Sight History is an international organization with more than 2 thousand members from all over the world who come together to share their love of firearmry and optics. Charlotte, North Carolina is a city located in the state of North Carolina. The population was 565,711 at the 2010 census. It is the ninth-most populous city in North Carolina and the second-largest city in Charlotte County. The city was founded by white men in 1795. The area that now calls Charlotte was what is now known as Mecklenburg County when it was part of Georgia. In 1821, after the removal of Native Americans from east Charlotte to reservations in what is today Raleigh, North Carolina, whites began to settle here and build churches and homes. In 1828, one of these settlers, James Kenedy, founded Kenedy & McDowell Railroad which connected downtown Charlotte with rural areas around Mecklenburg County. This railroad became known as Stokes Road because its original owner – General John Pemberton – donated land for it on which to be built. In 1845–46, during Reconstruction following the American Civil War, African Americans were given voting rights and began working for local businesses and government institutions through various initiatives such as black school buses (the first were manufactured by Waco Mechanical Company). As a result of this change in social dynamics and political stability within Charlotte during this time period (1845–1912), many businesses closed or relocated outside of town while African Americans continued to hold traditional jobs within their communities including janitorial work at schools and churches; construction workers; waitresses; maids; cooks; drivers for automobiles; streetcar operators; grocery store clerks; street cleaners/painters/levellers/fence keepers etc.; all without benefits or protection from discrimination or violence by white society against these laborers who constituted an overwhelmingly majority of African American citizens then living within Charlotte limits
