In 1892, William Cullen Bryant became chancellor of UNC Chapel Hill and began planning for its new campus in what is now Clemmons Township near where he would later die at age 96 years old;Clemmons would soon become one of Chapel Hill's most famous neighborhoods. Clemmons has been home to many businesses over the years including: Fidelity Investments (now JBS Investment Company), NCR Corporation (now NCR Corp.), American Tobacco Company (now Altria Group), Coca Cola Bottling Co., America Motorsports Park (now Lowe's Companies), Sam Rayburn Stadium (now played at Raymond James Stadium) and Eastern Shore Electric Cooperative between 1945-1971 FAMILY MATTERS There are two Mattressmakers in town - both run by Mrs Cline & Sons - one on Main Street right next to US Bank and another up Webster Road off I-85 just past Stop 16 on Old Spruce Rd Mrs Cline also makes bedding for local hotels which includes some really nice bedspreads like this one... There are two schools too - One located on Highway 85 just east of US Bank while the other is located down Main Street just west of US Bank across from Mrs Clines store
Clemmons was founded in 1793 by John Clemmons, a white Revolutionary War veteran. The town was named for Colonel James Clemmons, a Patriot leader and commander of the brigade that fought at Saratoga. The first post office opened in 1807. In 1851, the county seat moved to nearby Hendersonville.
