The shooting of black Americans by white supremacists and other groups has been a regular occurrence in the United States for over 50 years. InClemmons, North Carolina, one such event took place on May 20th, 1968 when three whites shot at African American students attending nearby Clemson University. Three people were killed and nine more were injured. The shootings brought public attention to the need for better security measures for black students studying abroad, as well ascrowhunters in general. In 1969, the US Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which outlawed discrimination in education, employment, and housing based on race or color. This law was followed up with several pieces of legislation designed to increase gun safety among civilians. Additionally, Clemmons became a city rule after being annexed by Clemson from Lexington County in 1972. Despite these efforts though, shootings against black students continued to occur throughout the 1970s and 1980s; most notably on December 14th 1984 when four white men opened fire at Marshall High School in West Tennessee killing seventeen people and injuring thirty-nine others before committing suicide. This attack is considered one of the deadliest school shootings in United States history. Clemmons is a town in Randolph County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham-Fayetteville metropolitan area. The first settler in Clemmons was James Dyer and his family who arrived from Virginia in 1799. They were followed by John Clemmons and his brother James in 1800. In 1802, the Clemmons brothers founded a Methodist church near what is now downtown Clemmons. They also began cultivating land around what is now Clemmon Lake for their own use and raising livestock. A store opened here in 1811 and soon became one of the most important businesses in town. George Washington Carver came toClemmons to purchase some equipment for his farm during World War I and stayed for three months before leaving again for another job offer. After he left, locals built him a home on Church Street as a souvenir! The carver's farm still stands today as part of the town park system with an exhibit onsite about his life and work! In 1824, Amos Holland settled in the area aroundClemmon Lake which would become Clemmons after he donated land to Randolph County for county seat purposes (later moved to Burlington). He started a gristmill that continued operation until it burned down in 1906; however, this mill has been replaced by several other mills located within Clemons limits over time including: J W Hogg & Sons (1912), Carter’s Mill (1954), Brown’s Mills(1971), Fidelity Foods (2007) and finally TPB Knowles Inc.(2010). In 1886 local school superintendent William C Moore sent word to parents wanting their children taught opportunities outside of home so farming families could send their kids away from cornfields all summer long instead of having them stay at home while they grew crops! This program eventually became known as “The Model School System” which continues today with many different options available to students across Randolph County! This history makes up much of what makes up today's community atmosphere - friendly people who are interested in learning more about their hometowns past - something that not many places can boast! Clemmons was founded in 1851 by John and Abigail Clemmons. The Clemmons family operated a log cabin on the banks of the Wateree River until they erected a frame house in 1875. In 1892, the Clemmons family donated land to build a school on which North Carolina State University was founded. The Clemmons School building still stands on campus today.
