Concord, North Carolina is a town in Buncombe County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. The first European to see Concord was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 when he sailed up the Yadkin River from Roanoke Island. He named it after his patron saint, St. Francis Xavier. One account says that John Wesley preached at an open air meeting near what is now downtown Concord on July 4, 1814; this event is generally recognized as being one of the most influential religious meetings in American history. In 1839 Governor James Knoppers granted land to The Baptist Missionary Society for building a church and school in what would become Concord Township (now Alamance County). The name "Concord" was given by Captain John Smith on November 10th 1775 while exploring what became known as present-day Asheville. A post office called Concord was established at this time, and mail continued to be delivered there until 1906 when it moved to Weaverville due to high postage rates in Buncombe County. In 1870 a fire destroyed much of downtown Concord but not all of it; construction began on a new downtown soon afterward which still stands today as one of America's most vibrant districts with many independently owned businesses including several churches and restaurants dating back to before 1800 On October 6th 1923 a tornado touched down just east of town damaging or destroying dozens of homes including some that still stand today There have been numerous floods over the years such as Hurricane Floyd in 1999 which caused extensive damage but no loss since both surety bonds were paid for by insurance companies The current name for town (and unofficial spelling) used throughout these years has been "Concord" even though there has never been any formal change official with regards to how people spell their name hereabouts . In recent years however some residents have started using "Avery", which honors local pioneer Avery Atkins who came through town early during development efforts . Finally within past few decades someone decided that it might make sense to start formally changing all forms into "Concord" so finally we are seeing someofficial changes happen! Asheville had always been an important center for commerce due largely to its location along two major rivers: the Watauga and Neuse Rivers allowed easy transportation across long distances without having to go through Charlotte or Raleigh respectively
