Dunn is a small town in North Carolina, located on the Outer Banks. The population was 7,752 at the 2010 census. It is situated on the eastern border of Wake County and is bordered by Johnston County to the east and Tryon County to the west. The Dunn Historic District contains over 100 buildings dating from 1785 to 1895, including one of the largest slave markets in America. The main thoroughfare in Dunn is called "Main Street", which runs along a series of rivers that run through it. Dunn was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1823 as a trading post on Catawba River near present-day Elizabethtown. The first settler, James Dunn, had been born in Scotland but arrived here with his family when he was just 15 years old. In 1829, James Dunn built himself a log cabin named "Dunn's Cabin" on what is now Main Street. In 1830, John Taylor set up shop nearby at 'Taylor's Store'. By 1840, there were five stores in what are today Dunn and Elizabethtown (now Graham). Some time during this period, John Crouch opened up his own store next door to 'Crouch's Furniture'. The area around present day Dunn came under English rule after Dunmore's War in 1688 and was designated as part of Sir Richard Eden's estate for £500 per annum payable yearly to him “in goods” (the same thing as land tax). After Eden died without heirs in 1701, his property passed into military hands until it was sold off by King George II following the American Revolution. After independence arrived though, General Robert Ewell confiscated all British possessions within two miles of Raleigh – including any property within three miles of downtown – although most people living within those boundaries did not experience much trouble because they continued to pay their taxes even though they didn’t have their properties seized or Busteeded like others inside Durham or Hillsborough counties.) One notable exception was James Denton who owned acres bordering Onslow Bayou outside Raleigh where he kept salt pork for storage until 1807 when he moved his business ashore so that he could build warehouses for exports instead; however due to this event many preventable fires broke out at Denton’s warehouse throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s which caused extensive damage &losses both financially &environmentally

In 1915, Dunn became an incorporated city with a population of 30,000. The city experienced rapid growth during World War II due to wartime demand for goods and services produced by Dunn's workers in the munitions industry. The post-war boom ended in the early 1970s as persistent economic decline caused by technological changes destroyed most manufacturing jobs in Dunn and other rural North Carolina towns. Today, there are only a few self-employed businesses remaining in Dunn and its downtown area is nearly deserted. However, some remnants of old industrial buildings survive including one former furnace that still functions as a business center dating back to the late 19th century
