Dunn is a town in Buncombe County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,245 at the 2000 census. The Dunn Micropolitan Statistical Area had a population of 9,927 as of 2010. The first European settlers in what is now Dunn were white Scots-Irish Presbyterians who arrived around 1740. They named their new settlement "New Galloway" after the old Gaelic kingdom of Galway in Ireland. In 1748, they moved to a more permanent location and called it "Dunn." They initially grew corn and beans but later developed into a small manufacturing center for paper products and other items such as shoes and clothing. Because of this success, Dunn quickly became one of the most important towns in eastern North Carolina. A post office was established at Dunn on April 12, 1824, by General James Robertson with the name "New Galloway." It remained open until December 15, 1865, when it was renamed "Dunn." On May 1st 1870 an act approved by the Georgia General Assembly authorized the donation to be made by trustees of Davidson College of land located east of Dunn on which three churches would be built: First Presbyterian (now Baptist), Second Presbyterian (now Methodist), and Third Methodist (now African American). The college's first president Drury donated $5200 for this project. On November 22nd 1880 General James Robertson granted incorporation to Dunn with Trustees providing that no change should take place in its form or organization without their consent; however due to lack of response from Trustees through July 8th 1881 all changes became effective immediately upon incorporation according to Statutes at Large chaptered August 3rd 1881 A bill entitled An Act To Dethrone Johnston And Make President Of State University Of North Carolina provided for construction by Elisha Prentice & Company beginning on October 1st 1885 with an appropriation from Govt thereof For said purpose... . . . This meeting resulted in formation of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill under Rev’d Wm Harnett ... [and] Drury resigned his presidency effective September 25th 1886 ... A post office called "Dunn" was established at this time and continued operation until 1899 when it was discontinued because mail service between Raleigh and Cullowhee had been discontinued due to competition from Raleigh's own post office... According to local legend two young men who ran away from home during Reconstruction founded what is now UNC-Chapel Hill while living near Dunkin' Donuts across US Highway 421...In 1916 Confederate Colonel Robert Ewell ordered all male students present at UNC-Chapel Hill not only turn over their weapons but also wear Ku Klux Klan robes so as not appear before Federal troops during World War I...This event is generally considered one point where UNC-Chapel Hill diverged from Southern Universities policy favoring neutrality...Today many people consider UNC Chapel Hill one of America’s leading universitiesqv The townspeople played an essential role in supporting education within their community throughout its history - starting out with creating a school system that served both rural residents and those living closer to larger city populations. Over time various schools have been built including Drew Elementary School (opened 1912), NC Central High School (opened 1955), NC State Polytechnic Institute (opened 1959), Eastern Nazarene College - currently known as ECU Panthers football team's home field since 1992*, Huntingdon Valley Technical Community College* (* opened 2009) - which serves Buncombe County's agricultural area plus nearby counties Wilson & McDowell* (* opened 2013) - which specializes primarily in health Technology programs(* (* closed 2017)) In addition to educating children there were also businesses that flourished thanks largely to Dunn's tightknit community atmosphere: banks like Jardine Banking Corp., Biltmore Furniture Co., Powers Printing Presses Inc., Cunningham Mfg., etc.*(* *closed 2007)*. These companies helped contribute greatly towards building up downtown Dunn into one OFNA(or Northern Crossroads Association?) centered business district today*. Additionally Dunnellan unions like UNION #2 steelworkers Local 1021 have strong roots going back more than 100 years** [* [*closed 2007]*. Despite these successes there are some negative aspects associated with life within the community such as high rates for crime*,xp** [*closed 2007] *. This has led some citizens to advocate for reformability/openness within municipal government* [* *****: **currently inactive****]. Overall though Dunnellan has managed successfully navigate its difficult times despite occasional challenges; placing emphasis on common bonds rather than specific factions or interests***** *.

Dunn was founded in 1824 by John Dunn and James Cunningham. The first store was on the current site of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which opened in 1827. In 1845, Dunn moved his business to what is now downtown Durham. In 1865, he became the first person to be elected mayor of Durham. From 1870-1875, he served as treasurer of North Carolina. He also served as a member of the United States Senate from 1865-1869 and again from 1893-1901.
