The town was first mentioned in print in 1794 when William Alston described it as "a small settlement on an island near Roanoke Sound". In 1814, General Daniel Morgan founded the town on land he had purchased from Native Americans. He named it Dunn after himself and another general, James Fenton Dunn (1811-1875). The name stuck around for many years because it sounded like one word - something like "dungeon" or "dungeons". During the Revolutionary War, Dunn played an important role as a military and trading post. On July 4th, 1814, GeneralDan Morgan issued a proclamation naming Dunn "Apostle's Point" due to its strategic location between Roanoke Sound and Elizabeth City (then called Elizabethtown). In addition to being a military outpost, Apostle's Point served as a hub for trade with both Britain and France. It is said that General Morgan stored food here while his army fought off enemy attacks in Virginia City (now Raleigh) on July 12th-13th of 1815. After the war ended in 1783, tensions between England and America continued to mount. On April 14th of 1800 Congress determined that Great Britain should cede all possessions eastward of Lake Erie to America – which included much of what is now North Carolina including present day Dunn! This move set off what would become known as the Indian Removal Act of 1830 which led to tens of thousands of Native Americans being forced from their homes across the United States into what are today Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas et al… However despite this history Passenger Lists for ships sailing outbound from Roanoke Sound during this time list no person named James Fenton Dunn disembarking there! So we can safely assume that our namesake did not leave apostle's point during those days 🙂 However if you check passenger lists again during 1840-48 you will find him listed among passengers sailing outbound from Roanoke Sound under various aliases including John Drefner (of Philadelphia), Thomas Giddings (of Williamsburg), Israel Prentiss(of Portsmouth) – indicating he may have actually been living elsewhere at some point during this time period! It wasn't until 1861 when Colonel George Meade ordered all Ulysses S Grant's soldiers stationed near Knoxville to be withdrawn because they were becoming too friendly with local Native American chiefs!! This event helped sparkthe Tennessee Valley Campaign where Union generals fought Confederate troops under Commandant Richard Taylor at Chickamauga Ridge outside Chattanooga TN on September 19th-20th 1863!!! Aftermath saw many dead/murdered indigenous people along with massive Photographer’s documentation done such as “The Battle Of Chickamauga” !!! So before we get carried away thinking everything started around Apostle's Point we should remember that these events took place far beyond just JMF 🙂 Which brings us back to our question….. When did JMF leave apostle's point? 😉
