Dunn is a small town in North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro-Winston-Salem metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1838 by John Dunn and his wife Martha. They named it after their father, George Washington Dunn, who had moved to the area from Scotland two years earlier. In 1845, they built a log cabin on what is now the town square and opened their store there. The Dunn family prospered through trade until 1865 when they bought land next door to build a gristmill that still operates today as Dunn's Mill Complex. In 1881, John's grandson James Waddell became the first white person born in Dunn and began farming there with his brother David Waddell. By 1890, James and David had married sisters Alice (Fannie) and Lizzie (Nora). They continued to farm for many years until 1900 when James sold his land to J.L Duke for $3 per acre ($24 million in current dollars). In 1902, J.L Duke donated 4 miles of railroad track leading from nearby Greensboro to Dunn so people could get access to market goods without leaving their homes or having to travel far away for food supplies In 1916, Dormer Blease purchased 1/4 mile of property east of present day Main Street from J.L Duke for $10 per acre ($320 million in current dollars). This made possible downtown growth which continues today with over 20 buildings located on Main Street between Patton Avenue and US 421A . From 1916 until 1949 when it was taken over by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as part of UNC system campus expansion plans, most businesses on Main Street were rented out or leased back by UNC students or staff who lived on Campus during those years . After 1949 when UNC System Plaza came into being (see below), all business owners were required to sell THEIR property within one year no matter what its value may be due to mandatory real estate development rules then in place . Today most businesses are still run out of doors since zoning has changed again making it difficult or impossible ever again for anyone other than local farmers & fisherman to do any significant business anywhere near downtown
