The first use of pepper spray in Dunn occurred on October 12, 1902 when police officers were called to an altercation between two groups of men. One group had possession of pepper spray while the other did not. The police sprayed both groups with pepper Spray, causing them to disperse. In 1905, Municipal Court Judge Frank Hargrave ordered that pepper spray be added to municipal ordinances for use by the public police department. On October 15, 1912 Battalion Captain John Averill deployed pepper canisters against a group of pro- union protestors who had broken into a local store. As soon as the canisters exploded, most of the protestors ran away but one man remained standing and he was hit with a Mace ball from Averill’s gun. He died from his injuries three days later. This event is also considered to be the first time that pepper spray was used in Dunn as an effective means of dispersing crowds

Dunn is a small town in North Carolina. It is located on the eastern edge of the state and it has a population of around 7,500 people. The name Dunn comes from two different locations - one near the confluence of the Yadkin and Trent rivers, and another about 10 miles east of town. The first place was named Dunn's Mills after James Dunn, who built it in 1792. He also developed nearby farms which produced corn, soybeans, cotton, and tobacco. In 1824, John Crouse (1793-1875) founded a plantation just south of present day Dunn in what is now Brooke County. Crouse was one of the early investors in textile production in North Carolina. His plantations were well known for their excellent cotton products that originated from his mills. In 1916, this area became part of Winston-Salem when Dunn incorporated as a separate municipality with its own government and street names. There have been many important moments to this small town over the years including World War II when it was selected as an emergency landing spot for troops sent to fight in Europe; being chosen as the site forthe world's largest Recorded Christmas parade; having its own elementary school rise to national prominence; becoming home to North Carolina's FIRST air traffic control tower; and more recently hosting several high-profile events such as the PGA Championship golf tournament or NASCAR races at Charlotte Motor Speedway
