Durham, North Carolina is a city in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 695 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Durham County and home to Duke University. In addition to Duke University, other major employers in Durham include The American Red Cross (ARC), J.C. Penney Companies, Tyco International Inc., and UNC Chapel Hill School of Medicine. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Durham COUNTY were French traders and missionaries who arrived from Canada in 1719 AD. By 1735 they had founded two settlements: Quebec City on Bulls River and Stocksbridge on Fayetteville Creek. The area that would become Durham County was first settled by Scots Presbyterians in 1801 as part of the East Tennessee Colony under President James Ketchum's orders to survey land for new Scottish settlements west of Appalachia. In 1828 when North Carolina became a state, it included portions of present-day Durham County as well as Wake County to the east and Tryon County to the north-west; all but Wake were added to South Carolina during Reconstruction after the Civil War due to their slaveholding populations (Wake had abolished slavery by 1865). During World War II much activity took place within or near downtown Durham where many factories were built such as Ford Motors Plant #3 which produced P-38 Lightning fighter planes for USAAF use; General Motors Corporation's research Laboratories located across from Union Station; Ralston Purina pet food plants at both corners of Dyer Street just south of I-85; Allied Chemical Company's Wilmington plant manufacturing mustard gas for World War II effort; Rubbermaid also headquartered in town before moving its corporate headquarters outside Raleigh following fire bombings during that time period; DuPontchemical Labs located just off Interstate 85 between Candler Road and Research Triangle Park Way with laboratories focused on organic chemistry development until it merged with Dow Agrochemicals years later Finally Duke Energy Cooperative Power Plant began operations producing electric power for local residents beginning in 1922

Durham was founded in 1795 by General James Moore and is named after him. It became a county seat in 1839 and it is now the largest city in the University of North Carolina system. Durham, North Carolina was founded in 1795 by General James Johnston. The town grew rapidly and soon became a major center of the American Revolution. In 1798, Durham became the capital of North Carolina after it was established as the state's second capital. During the Revolutionary War, Durham sided with America and helped to win independence from Great Britain. After the war, Durham prospered as a commercial and cultural center. In 1819, the city moved from its original location on Hillsborough Street to what is now downtown. In 1828, Durham became part of Alabama when that state was created from parts of South Carolina and Georgia. After Alabama gained its own government, it began to lose population as people fled to Northern states such as Virginia or Tennessee for political reasons during the 1830s and 1840s. By 1850, however, Durham had become one ofAlabama's most prosperous cities and had reached its peak as a slave-holding society. However, following African American emancipation in 1865 (following the Civil War), Durham declined rapidly until it declined completely by 1880 due to increasing urbanization and industrial development in nearby Raleigh County.
