At that time the area was very unpopulated and there were not many roads or settlements. By 1830, a small community had been born around the Powell home at present day Eden High School. However, it did not stay long- within five years Powell had moved away again to start his own farmstead near Greer. In 1834, David Merrill landowner built him a two-story cabin for use as a house and store on what is today Merrill Street in town. From this point forward, until 1865 when the federal government took over South Carolina's education system, Eden became an important stop on travelers' routes southward from South Carolina's more developed areas
