Elizabeth City was founded in 1776 by the English settlers. The city was named for Elizabeth, Lady Fayette, who helped finance the colony’s startup. The city became a major slaveholding center during the antebellum era. In 1860, after the U.S. Civil War ended, Elizabeth City surrendered to Confederate forces and became one of their main northern strongholds. In 1865, after Union troops invaded North Carolina and captured Elizabeth City, all citizens were required to leave the city or be deported. After Reconstruction ended in 1877, Elizabeth City reverted back to its original English name and declined an offer from neighboring Charlotte to become its new capital.
