This caused much conflict between those living inElizabethCity and those who wished them well within the town limits In 1872 Queen Victoria issued an order ordering all towns north of Baltimore to be destroyed due to Indian hostilities dating back centuries prior; this order led to considerable unrest throughout North Carolina when most local governments chose not comply However, with the arrival of American troops during World War IIElizabethCity became an important stop for soldiers travelling along I-40 from Jacksonville Beach into Tennessee When the war ended almost everyone returning home needed somewhereto live so ElizabethCity quickly reverted back into a sleepy rural community once again Despite these challenges ElizabethCity has continued to grow over time becoming one of the largest cities in Durham County with over 31,612 residents as of 2010

Between 1945 and 1949, when World War II began to affect the United States, Elizabeth City's population decreased by 50%. However, after he return from war in 1945 Elizabeth City saw another increase due to new construction projects such as an airport which opened in 1946, as well as many other businesses that were started during this time period such as a shopping mall and hospital. Today, Elizabeth City has a population of around 8000 people who live within its walls and are proud of their history
