Elizabeth City is a town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,653 at the 2010 census. Elizabeth City is one of the most historically significant cities in the state and has been home to some of the first white settlers in North Carolina. In 1838, Elizabeth City became part of what would become known as the Carolinas during their merger with Virginia. The city's history dates back to 1795 when General James Wilkinson founded Elizabeth Townsite on present-day East Main Street in what is now downtown Elizabeth City. The town was named for British Virgin Islands native and Maryland politician, Lady Elizabeth Woolridge Spencer. Wilkinson had come to America specifically to found a new colony in what would eventually be called North Carolina and named his new settlement after his wife’s namesake from Britain – Elizabeth Woolridge Spencer. At that time, there were just eight settlements in Rutherford County and only two people living within a radius of 350 miles of Raleigh – Wilmington and Chapel Hill (the original seat of government). The community rapidly grew thanks to its location close to resources such as textile mills and agricultural land near major rivers such as Broad River. In 1804, Wilkinson sold all but 1/3 of the town site to local landowners for $2 per acre (valued then at $10 peracre). In 1808, nine years after he founded Elizabeth Townsite, General James Wilkinson again establishedElizabeth City by purchasing 640 acres (2 km²) along Broad River from Alexander McDowell for $4 per acre ($40 per hectare). That same year saw another expansion when Wilkinson purchased an additional 2 km² (800 feet²) adjacent to present-day West Main Street from Drayton Tatum for $8 peracre ($160 per hectare). By 1830, nearly 400 homes had been erected withinElizabeth City limits with an aggregate value of over $1 million (based on current prices).[1] In 1830–1831 USS Constitution , commanded by Commodore John Rodgers made her maiden voyage down Broad River landing at present-day Port Royal . After disembarking her passengers including representatives from 20 U.S. states and Canada under Rear Admiral David Porter she underwent repairs at Hawkins Lighthouse before returning upriver on September 10th 1930 - less than a week after her launch date![2][3] As American international trade increased so did immigration intoElizabethCity through waves of European refugees who arrived during the panic weeks leading upto & following World War II; many seeking work or shelter on Broadway Avenue which served as both commercial center & social hub.[4][5][6] Some examples include: Florence Ballard who accompanied families seeking refuge outstripping any available jobsites across Charlotte while working multiple shifts daily delivering coal cars loads onto& off the busloads headed for Durham; Dutch immigrant Johan de Witt who ran a bakery next door until fire destroyed it in 1954; Englishman Edward Thorpe who opened Ayer’s Cigar Store prior to its closure shortly thereafter due largely to drought conditions which ravaged much Northwestern NC during that time period; among others.[7] During Prohibition prohibitionists closed many businesses throughout North Carolina due primarily à lack thereof available fuel supplies amidst sporadic violence between pro-and anti-coholic factions spread throughout rural areas throughout Appalachia (& other southern states), thus limiting opportunities for entrepreneurs like Thorpe or Ballard etc... Many residents chose instead not To vend alcohol or violate laws against public drunkenness & open container (& related activities); this choice effectively preserved many cultural icons associated with pre-ProhibitionNashville - like Pinnacle Shoes [now Century 21]; Mrs Maynard's [now Quiznos]; Fuzzy Wuzzy Candied Bacon Pizza Place [now Papa John's]; BB King’s [later Dairy Queen ]; among others...[8] Economic stability returned post prohibition however various groups still engaged in anti-alcoholism activism & opposition thereto well into late1990s despite dropsin manufacturing jobs (-50% nationally by 1990)[9][10] Thus continuing economic volatility resultant from global recession early 2000s impacting entire southeastern US
