Fayetteville is a town in Wilson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 18,811 at the 2010 census. Fayetteville is the county seat and largest city of Wilson County. It is located on the border of Henderson and Johnston counties. The first human settlement in what is now Fayetteville was made by colonists from South Carolina in 1781 during the American Revolutionary War. James Robertson founded a small trading post here in 1787 and named it Fort Davidson after his Scottish father-in-law, David Davidson. By 1800, there were over 100 settlers living in this area. In 1806, General Andrew Jackson moved 700 men from Georgia to found what would become Fayetteville as a military academy for West Point cadets called "Jackson's Academy". When soldiers arrived here in 1810 they discovered that land had not been surveyed for development yet so stores and homes were built without much thought to future use or preservation. Fayetteville became an important crossroads for transportation because it lay on two major trails: the road leading east to Raleigh through Newton and Onslow Counties and then north to Charlotte; and the main route between Nashville and Lexington through western Henderson County (now part of Johnson County). This allowed goods moving eastward along these routes as well as northward via Elizabethtown before reaching Raleigh or Lexington to be transported all the way downriver to Charleston or Wilmington before being sold off piecemeal throughout much of America. In 1865, when Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House, most of eastern North Carolina including Fayetteville fell into Union hands but some parts remained under Confederate control until 1865 while other areas such as Henderson County fell into Union hands December 12th following Pickett's surrender at Missionary Ridge near Durham City. In total about 20% of North Carolina was lost during World War II with plantations falling into Union hands while African Americans continued to be enslaved until 1861 when they were abolished by General George McClellan's Northern Army after Battle of Bull Run Bridge which ended slavery throughout most of the state excepting some rural areas where it continued sporadically until 1865
