These handguns used musket balls instead of powder and ballisticks which gave them their nickname of “Powder Hounds” because they could fire only cannonballs at a time. It took until 1836 for rifles to be able to use lead bullets instead of smoothbore cannonsball so these pistols became obsolete. Lead bullets were easier for users to control and stayed in flight longer so they became popular among marksmen. In 1844, George Ransom patented his design for an Improvement in Rifle Balls that would allow them to be shot through walls without detonating. This helped make rifle rounds more effective against enemy positions as well as becoming one of the key technologies that led to the development of machine guns during World War I. In 1865, John Browning submitted his own improvement on rifles called the lever action rifle which allowed shooters greater accuracy when firing from cover or behind obstacles however it did not gain widespread acceptance until after WWI when it was used by both sides in trench warfare
