Garner is a town in Newton County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,971 at the 2010 census. Garner is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first gun magazines were established in Garner in 1892 by A.J. Cook and Wm. J. Henson as a way to increase production for local muzzleloader manufacturers who could not find enough customers to buy their products wholesale. In 1907, John Biddle started manufacturing shotgun ammunition here which led to the development of firearm accessory manufacturing businesses in Garner as well. In 1964, First National Ammunition Company merged with Winchester Ammunition Corporation to form Winchester Repeating Arms Incorporated (WRAI). The company manufactured both civilian and military firearms until it discontinued sales in 1998 due to financial problems; however, some legacy firearms still remain in-house including the Winchester Model 70 rifle and shotguns. In 2001, WRAI was purchased by American Outdoor Brands Corporation (AOBC) for $2 billion making it one of the largest sporting goods companies in the world; however, AOBC has since sold most of its firearms operations back into government hands as part of a program called "Restructuring." In 2006, Century Arms Corporation announced that they would be moving their operations from Wilmington NC to Garner due to economic turndowns throughout much of eastern North Carolina following Hurricane Katrina; however this move did not materialize and only lasted through 2009 when Century Arms pulled out all but their reloading facilities before ceasing business altogether due lack of interest from consumers or competition from larger suppliers such as Remington Ammo & Sportsman Division LLC.).
Garner is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Garner is located on the eastern edge of Gaston County and is bordered to the north by Cumming and to the east by textile city of Elizabethtown. The center of Garner is surrounded by wooded hills. The first European settlers in what would become Garner were German missionaries who arrived in 1796. The town was named for John Randolph, 5th Viscount Granville after he donated land for a school and church in 1802. It was incorporated as a town on May 8, 1887. In 1915, Garner became part of Gaston County when it was formed from portions of Newton and Tryon Counties. Garner experienced some hard times during World War II: its residents supported the war effort but were forced to evacuate due to air raids; however, they soon returned and helped rebuild their community post-war. After World War II ended, Garner experienced another period of growth with new businesses opening up and many people moving into the area; however, this growth came to an end in the late 1990s when violence began to increase in the community. In recent years there has been renewed interest in revitalizing local businesses and culture through events like art shows and music festivals as well as development projects such as a new high school that opened its doors in Fall 2013
In 1871, George Stephenson invented the first successful locomotive engine, and in 1876 he patented a design for an armoured cart with multiple guns. The first practical gun magazine was built in 1881 by George W. Brown of Buffalo Arsenal in New York City. From then until World War I, magazines were used to store ammunition for artillery and cavalry units. During World War I, the use of magazines grew out of necessity as rifles became more powerful and accurate. To make sure that each regiment had enough ammunition, rifle companies began to be organized into battalions or brigades. A battalion was divided into squads (or platoons), each of which carried a squad’s worth of ammunition at all times. This system allowed commanders to keep track of where their troops were located and ensure that they had the munitions they needed to fight effectively. Gun magazines also became important during World War II because tanks became increasingly mobile and required large numbers of rounds per minute to function effectively. To meet this need, many factories started producing special magazines that could hold up to 50 rounds per minute. In addition, tank crews often traveled in groups and needed access to fresh cartridges at all times so that they could fire accurately without having any trouble hitting their targets. As a result, magazines became an essential part of tank warfare throughout the war.

The city of Raleigh erected a monument to Samuel Garner in 1911 near his home at 670 West Main Street. The statue is made of granite and has a cast iron base with an inscribed plaque that reads "Samuel Sargent Garneret born at Gardner November 10th 1785 died December 14th 1865." Garner first started Settlement west of present day Raleigh on what is now called Swain's Mill Road (now Boulevard). Garner was founded in 1845 by John Garner and his family. The townspeople of Garner were the first to settle in the area and started trading with the Cherokee Nation. Garner was a small community until 1851 when it grew to around 100 people. In 1865, the town became part of Henderson County when that county was created from parts of Johnston and Henderson counties. The population had grown to over 1,000 by 1870, but declined precipitously during the Reconstruction period. By 1880, Garner had only 350 residents remaining and lost its status as a market center due to its distance from major cities. In 1924, Garner merged with neighboring towns Blackwater Township and Uniontown to form what is now known as Uniontown-Garner County Park.
