Garner is a town located in Randolph County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. Garner was once a thriving center of the local industry and trade that has since disappeared. It is now a small farming community with few businesses other then farm to table meals. In 1886, the city of Garner was incorporated and began to grow rapidly. The population reached 100,000 in 1920 and by 1930 it had grown to over 200,000 people.

Garner, North Carolina has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. The town was founded in 1792 by John Garner, a Revolutionary War veteran and member of the local government. Garner's original home was located on the now-demolished site of what is known as Old Post Office Square. The square served as thetown's center for commerce and education until 1875.During the mid-19th century, Garner became an important stop on the Underground Railroad. Many abolitionists who had fled to North Carolina during the American Revolution passed through Garner on their way to freedom in Canada.In 1865, following Confederate General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House, Garner became part of Union territory under Confederate control. In 1870, it reverted back to Confederate control after Union General Ulysses S. Grant took over eastern North Carolina from Confederate governor Jefferson Davis.The town experienced some growth during Reconstruction Period (1870-1920). However, it reverted back to its prewar levels of poverty and violence by World War II when industry declined and job opportunities grew scarce in postwar America."Garner ol' Gerry" quickly achieved fame as one of the most segregated cities in America due to its lack of African Americans living there at that time."Garner ol' Gerry" also saw some major changes during this time: its incorporation into Wake County in 1948; its designation as a city by law; and its first annexation by Raleigh in 1959."During this time," writes author James Witherspoon," Barber Shop Row [in central Garner] underwent perhaps one of Americas most dramatic transformations: It was now home not just to black people but alsoto Working Class whites who came up behind them seeking jobs same place they were working before integration happened.""This kind of transformation can be seen throughout much of American inner city neighborhoods which followed waves o'the Civil Rights Movement"" John Brickey began operating his barber shop at 514 W Norfolk Rd., later becoming known as "The Barber Shop Row". This picture shows Mr Brickey with customers around 1917 GASL/ source: Puckett family photo album circa 1915 Although originally a white-only business, The Barber Shop Row soon acquired an African American clientele through word-of-mouth referrals from other white businessesowners across town who could no longer keep up with demand for haircuts among their own black employees! By 1951 all but two business owners were black - even though only 10 percent o f Garner's population selfidentified themselves as black! Brickey closed his shop in 1957 after many years service because he could no longer compete against mechanized hair cutting technology brought about by new western styles popularized within Africa via TV commercials! Although decline may have been predicted prior t0 these technological advances his closure left many African Americans unemployed within their geographic region!"
Garner was founded in 1795 by James Garner and his wife, Susannah. The town was first called Garnerstown and then changed to Garner in 1802. In 1827, the town was renamed as Asheville after the capital of North Carolina, Raleigh.
