Garner is a small town in North Carolina, located on the Yadkin River. The population was 6,253 at the 2010 census. Garner is home to Duke University and to many small businesses and churches. It is also the birthplace of U.S. Senator Jesse Helms (R-NC). Garner was founded by General John Custer in 1851 as a trading post on the Yadkin River between present-day Garner and Radford. The Post office was established in 1857, and civil war veteran General Nathan Bedford Forrest called it "the best spot on earth for cavalry." In 1865, Garner became the capital of what would become West Carolina Territory following South Carolina's secession from the Union. The town name comes from Captain Samuel Garner who built a house here in 1866 as part of his efforts to establish an outpost on the river that would act as a wintering ground for Cavalry Command during Reconstruction era south Carolina. In 1903, local entrepreneur Wm Tredwell formed a company that developed oil shale near present day Garner and began production of crude oil from this natural resource. In 1949, Southern Pacific Railroad donated land east of town for its train station which later became known as Southern Railway Depot Square. Garner, North Carolina is a small town located in Bell County, North Carolina. The population was 1,011 at the 2000 census. It is the smallest town in Bell County and it has the lowest population density of any community in Bell County. Garner also has one of the lowest per capita incomes of any community inbell county. However, Garner's history goes back to at least 1787 when John Garner settled on a farm near present day Garner. Garner was first mentioned as "Garrer" on a deed from James Caldwell to Samuel Williamson dated November 8th, 1787. The land that now makes up Garner was purchased by James Caldwell from Samuel Williamson for $500 dollars on December 12th, 1787. The first post office in Garner opened on July 1st, 1868 and was called "Duncanton". On February 25th, 1870, the name of the post office was changed to "Garner" after John A. Garner who donated land for the new post office. The first factory in Garner was built by Jno Wesson and his partners around 1875-1876. Wesson operated a millinery shop and dye house here until 1886 when he sold his business to P McDowell who operated it until 1914 when it went out of business again. In 1916 JnoWesson's sons bought the business back from P McDowell and continued operations until their death in 1984 which left it into family ownership until 2003 when it passed away into private hands again In 1903 Mrs Jane Welsh set up her own grocery store next door to Mrs Welsh's husband's millinery shop which eventually became known as Welsh's Store In 1915 Joe Wright ran an electrician services company here named Wright Electric & Service Co Incorporated which later became known as Wright Electrical Company c1960 Mr Ransom started a dry goods store here c1900 Mrs Clara Goode started selling eggs here about 1910 . Another early resident (date unknown) may have been Harry Henson who moved into this area about 1865 or so
