The Gastonia Gun Case Museum is a non-profit gun case history museum in Gastonia, North Carolina that has been in operation since 1984. It was founded by local historian and collector, Tom Doherty. The museum has collection of over 2,500 firearms from both the antebellum and post-apocalyptic periods. Gastonia's early settlement began with smallpox epidemics which killed many people in the area. One of the first guns to be owned in Gastonia was an old muzzleloader purchased by Adolphus Pease from Cherokee Nation Indians in 1827. In 1875, Gaston County became one of seven counties within North Carolina to ratify the 15th Amendment to the United States Constitution which granted voting rights to African Americans. In 1924, Gaston County voters passed a resolution recognizing rifle shooting as a sport and adopting the name "Gaston Rifle Shooting Association" (GRSA). The association soon grew into what it is today - becoming one of the most influential organizations for rifle shooters in southeasternNorth Carolina. GRSA sponsored numerous NRA meetings throughout central North Carolina until 1970 when it merged with another gun organization -the NRA's Tennessee Valley chapter - to form what is now known as "The National Rifle Association – Tennessee Valley". On December 14, 1860 Confederate General Nathaniel Banks attacked Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor while Naval Squadron One hundred fifty (Naval Squadron 100) sailed past behind cover of darkness; this event catalyzed South Carolinians into full-scale civil war one month later when Confederate Governor Tryon ordered his soldiers to storm Fort Sumter without warning his own people or attacking opposition inside!
