Graham is a city in North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Graham County. The community was named after James Graham, a brigadier general in the Confederate Army and governor of South Carolina during Reconstruction. Graham became part of the Union Territory of North Carolina following the American Civil War. The first permanent settler in Graham was John Whitefield who arrived around 1785. He founded what is now known as Whitefield's Landing on Hatteras Inlet and developed an extensive cotton plantation that included about 400 slaves. Whitefield died not long after his arrival and his plantations were passed down by his descendants until they were sold to David Dunlap in 1827 and anonymous investors in 1830. At this time, Graham had a population of only 10 people and consisted primarily of rice farmers and fishermen from nearby Tybee Island%. In 1835, William Jarratt established a trading post on Jarratt's creek which later became known as Jarratt's Station(). By 1850, it had grown to include two stores, three churches, five schools (one private), fifteen homes, four blacksmiths/weavers shops (including one run by African Americans), several mills including one producing flour for local markets and two steamboats moored on Hatteras Inlet providing transportation services between Tybee Island and central NC
