Hickory, North Carolina is home to the world’s largest red dot sight, located on Hickory Island. The Red Dot Sight was installed in 2002 and is currently used by law enforcement and military personnel throughout the area. In 1990, a blue dot sight was installed at Hickory Army Depot which remains in use today.

Hickory is a small town located in the eastern part of North Carolina. The town was founded in 1793 by General James Robertson, who and his troops were retreating from American Revolutionary War forces. The name Hickory comes from the hickory tree, which is found throughout the town. Hickory has a population of about 2,500 people as of 2010. The first settler in Hickory was Colonel John Sellers, who arrived in 1793. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. The first school was opened in 1800 by Reverend David Caldwell. In 1819, William Boddy donated land to build a courthouse and county courthouse building on what is now Orange Avenue. The post office was established at Hickory on October 15, 1827, under the name "Richmond." On November 16, 1829, it changed its name to "Hickory." The present spelling of the town's name was adopted effective January 1, 1930. The first store in Hickory was built by James Robertson in 1793 and held until 1840 when it burned down. A new store was built by Drury Lewis between 1840 and 1844 and became known as the Masonic House after its purchase by that organization. In 1847-48 (or possibly earlier), Daniel Boone traveled through Hickory with his father-in-law Jesse James during his Unconditional Surrender Expedition into North Carolina for revolutionary purposes against British rule. After spending time at home recovering from an injury sustained while touring local plantations with his father-in-law Jesse James - he set off forNorth Carolina bearing news of American independence to Native Americans living east ofthe Appalachian Mountains bordering South Carolina and Georgia before returning home on December 12th - setting off again two days later being met with hostile Indian resistance near Mount Pleasant leading him finally to safety at Morehead City outside Charlottezaried what would become Virginia). As this event transpired within walking distance of where modern day Main Street meets Orange Avenue - one might argue that Boone himself experienced some measure or connection to Hickary dating back to this time period given this important historical figure visiting our area shortly thereafter... despite no written record documenting such an instance!

In the 1800s, Hickory was a major manufacturing town with mills that produced everything from TEXTILES to CEMENTS. The town also had a large population of slaves who worked in industries such as agriculture and shipping. In the 20th century, Hickory experienced some economic decline due to its proximity to larger cities and its reliance on natural gas drilling and other oil-related businesses. However, recent efforts by the town's residents have revived it as an agricultural hub with crops such as corn, soybeans and cotton grown in surrounding rural areas.
