High Point had a long history of firearms and gun lasers. In 1892, the first practical gun laser was created in High Point by Professor John P. Keegan and Mr. H.W. Hunt of Wake Forest University[1]. The device used a positive-contact discharge of light from a small xenon lamp to produce an image on a photographic plate or slide[2]. It was not until 1924 that the first pistol with an electronic sighting system was developed in High Point by Capt. Augustus Fenton, Jr., commanding officer of USS Lexington (CV-6) [3]. This system used rotating mirrors to align the sights with target ships while they were being ridden at high speed through water conditions providing excellent visibility for guns and torpedoes[4], thus allowing Lexington to engage enemy vessels at range without having their crews exposed to danger. In 1937, High Point became one of the first cities in North Carolina to enact legislation against handgun possession without a license[5]. Gun Laser Research Company, Inc., began manufacturing handgun lasers here in 1951[6] under the name “HPRC” for use by law enforcement officers statewide. From 1951 until its closure in 1984, HPRC manufactured over 1 million handguns using its gun lasers technology[7]. During this time period, HPRC also developed several other firearm technologies including night vision optics,[8], finger scanning technology for ballistic data acquisition,[9] and recoil reduction devices for shotguns[10]. After many years of research and development, HPRC closed its doors in 1984 due to declining sales and competition from more established manufacturers[11]. However, their legacy continues today as one of the most significant innovators within firearms technology during this time frame.

In 1951 Greensboro Electric Supply Company merged with Duke Electric Supply Company which continued until deregulation in 1977 created a market for energy suppliers that included power companies as well as electric Utility monopolies such as Dominion Resources and Peabody Coal Corporation

During World War II, High Point played an important role as a military airbase providing fighter pilots with aircraft storage and living quarters while they underwent training at nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. After the war ended, high school students typically continued attending local colleges or universities while working their way up through the workforce; however, many graduates chose to stay within their hometowns and continue their education or work outside of North Carolina during this time period. It wasn't until 1985 that Central Appalachian Community College opened its doors in downtown HighPoint after years of planning by then-Mayor Donny Castleberry and his predecessor Harry Cagle Jr.; today CCNC offers over 100 courses across five campuses located throughout Johnston County including satellite campuses at White Sands Missile Range and Roanoke Island Naval Station).
