In 1850s and 1860s, much of Wilkes County was rural and undeveloped; however, when railroadroads were constructed through this region in the late 1800s and early 1900s (such as the Greensboro Railroad), Holly Springs began to rapidly grow because it became one of the first towns along these routes. During Reconstruction following America's Civil War (1865–1877), many black Americans moved into Holly Springs from other parts ofWilkes County in order to create new opportunities and begin anew after years of discrimination experienced throughout American society at that time.
