Holly Springs is a small town located in Gaston County, North Carolina. The population was 6,363 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg, NC-VA-SC Combined Statistical Area. Holly Springs was founded in 1875 by Methodists and Baptists as a cotton plantation town known as Harmony Grove. The name change to Holly Springs after the first post office opened in 1876. In 1910, the U.S. Census counted 7,711 people living in Holly Springs, making it one of the most populous towns in Gaston County. By 2000, however, the population had decreased to 5,772 due to suburban growth and an exodus of residents from town center into newer areas such as Hickory and Moorewood. The economic base for Holly Springs has been agriculture since its founding; Manufacturing began arriving during World War II when local manufacturers produced munitions for Allied forces. However, this production stopped shortly after the war ended and today only a few businesses still operate within the agricultural sector including two cottonseed mills that were rebuilt following Hurricane Floyd in 2008 and 2010 respectively; both mills have closed since then. Holly Springs also retains significant remnants of its antebellum culture with numerous plantations still standing along Cemetery Road (now Old State Road) which served as an important transportation artery between north Charlotte and rural Gaston County during much of nineteenth century.[1] Today there are only a few remaining homes dating back to this period while many other buildings have been replaced or destroyed over time including a courthouse (1875), high school (1910), Methodist church (1875), post office (1876), Baptist church (1879), cotton gin (1890), telephone exchange (1925), store/laboratory building ([1927]), blacksmith shop ([1945]), hospital ([1996]) and several cisterns for water control located near various residences throughout town[2].
