In 1945, Holly Springs became an all-black town when white people withdrew from the area following World War II. The town's first black mayor, A.D. "Buzz" Youngblood, served from 1946 to 1950 and again from 1953 to 1955; he also chaired the city council. In 1978, two African American students were arrested for burglary after breaking into a white home in Holly Springs; this made national news and led to public outcry against racism in South Africa that year. Holly Springs has been known for its annual Pumpkin Festival since 1990 and its yearly Bluegrass Fest since 2006 which features bands like Emmylou Harris and Lady Antebellum as well as food vendors such as Hickory BBQ & Harpy's Food Truck Tourmaline (www.hickorybbqandharpystourmalinellc.com).

In 1881, Holly Springs was renamed for General John Custer after he died during an Indian battle in what is now Bradley County. The town lost its status as a commercial center after World War II but has regained some of its former prominence through tourism and education.
